I moved away to Swansea looking for a better life
Something more fulfilling I could do
But there only seemed to be one employer in the town
So, I got myself a job with the DVLA.
They sat me next to Sandra, she’d been there for 20 years
They said that she could show me all the ropes
But in my fist week in the place, she just showed me the canteen
And photos of her son
He’s in the police.
I’d been there for a month when Sandra called my name
Said there was something urgent I must do
Choose what I want to eat at the office Christmas lunch
As she handed me the form
I said “Sandra it’s July!”

After six months in our job
I looked under our desks
And all I saw was piles and piles of post.
I turned to speak to Sandra
About why this was ignored
But it was one minute to five
And she was heading for the door.

Eventually I took Sandra to one side and said:
“I’ve been here almost a year now and in all that that time I have done no work whatsoever,
and as far as I can tell nor have you.
Shall we not open some of that post,
and maybe respond to people’s applications,
and questions and complaints, and what have you.
Sandra looked at me wit cold cruel eyes, and hissed
“How dare you, if you ever say anything like this ever again, I will destroy you”.
I moved away from Swansea fearing for my life
But also, quite concerned about my mind
It’s not good for the brain doing nothing all day long
That’s why I left my job
at the DVLA.
