From How2 to U2: Gareth and Bono
Friends Reunited has got nothing on this one. Gareth has recently caught up with his ex-boss of 22 years ago, and it’s none other than the lead singer of U2, Bono Vox.
Way, way back in the early (and we mean early) 80’s when Gareth was a roadie known by the nickname Gaz Top, he became rather friendly with an up-and-coming Irish pop group of the day known as U2, joining them on their War tour across the United States, working as Bono’s personal roadie.
“Bono was a great boss” revealed Gareth, “He used to talk to me between songs during the shows – whisper stuff when I was in the pit in front of him. We have bumped into each other since then – the last time was in 1992, but he’s such an international superstar now that I decided I was unlikely to ever hook up with him again unless I made it happen myself”
So, when the Welshman found out that his old, old pal was due to appear on Friday Night With Jonathan Ross he couldn’t resist crashing the guest list to say hello again to his former employer.
And he was glad he did. Bono, Edge, Larry & Adam claimed to be as pleased to see their old roadie as he was to see them:
“They said they’d followed my TV shows over the years. Apparently, when I’m on, they point at the screen shouting ‘I know him!’ That’s so funny. They always did have a great sense of irony”.
