Don't Believe Everything You Read

Gareth was more than a little surprised recently to be named as the new editor of Personal Computer Weekly.

A report appearing in the on-line technology newspaper "The Register" claimed that the technophile TV presenter had been selected for PCW's top job. Unfortunately, this was the first that Gareth had heard about it.

Although Gareth does have a thorough knowledge of computer technology and has both made programmes and written articles on the subject for magazines, he has never edited a magazine.

Gareth Jones On-Line contacted Kieren McCarthy at The Register to find out why they ran this fictitious story, his reply: "It was a rumour that one or two people within the company had told me about and it seemed possible, so I thought it would be an entertaining story to run. Unfortunately the company in question was less enamoured with the story."

It didn't occur to The Register to check it's facts with any of the Parties concerned before going ahead and publishing the article, causing quite a rumpus in the offices of PCW, who were understandably upset.

Gareth was less worried: " Well to be honest, I'm flattered, It's the sort of job that I would relish the chance to do, it's a shame that it just isn't true!"

This kind of thing has happened to the Welshman before. A few years ago it was even suggested that he was in the running for the job of head of children's programmes and the BBC, despite the fact that he has been on ITV for 16 years!
