TV Presenting: The Next Generation

Gareth took himself out of the public eye recently to work on his most significant production to date. Another co-production, actually, with Violet Berlin of ITV's "The Big Bang".

No TV show this time, but the birth of the couple's first child, Tycho Clwyd Berlin Jones.

The 3.2kg baby boy turned up 12 days late. At 2.29am on Friday July 28th 2000, after 15 hours of labour. Violet had to be rushed into an operating theatre for an emergency caesarian section. Thankfully, the truly life-saving team at the Homerton Hospital in Hackney ensured that mother and baby came out of the trauma fit and well.

There was nothing that the team or, indeed, anyone in medical science could do for Gareth, however. Ever since meeting his tiny son, the TV presenter has been hopelessly overwhelmed.

"I have had some extraordinary experiences", enthused the new dad, "Such as flying faster than sound, having my own TV series, meeting my heroes like Slade and Buzz Aldrin, but nothing compares to this. I am deeply indebted to the staff at the Homerton and completely in love with our beautiful baby and his wonderful mother".

The little lad has been called Tycho after the most beautiful crater on Earth's moon. His middle names are also geographical, but slightly more down to earth. Clwyd is the area of North Wales in which Gareth grew up, and Berlin is the city in Germany that makes up Violet's surname.

The proud parents and the little person are currently at home together in Stoke Newington learning how to be a family.
