#079 We drive the Lexus LS600h near-silent, auto-parking luxo-barge, in the city, on the motorway, and let it drive and park itself whenever possible. And why that car is a bit like Top Of The Pops from 1983. Sniff scoops the new RedBull F1 Car with auto park, and the secrets of the latest Jag engines. Plus new music as Gareth performs “The Computer In My Car”.

The Computer In My Car

Gareth Jones On Speed - The Computer In My Car

I like automotive technology, but things are going too far.
I’m doing less overtaking and being taken over by the computer in my car.

Oh my telephone talks to my sat-nav.
My remote control talks to my car.
It locked me out of the driving seat coz I’d had one drink too far.

My brakes work fine without me,
My car starts without a key.
Soon my car is going to be driving around without me.

The climate control condenses the air,
A breakdown from wear and tear is rare.
My car is automatic, all I have to do is be there.

I like automotive technology, but things are going too far.
I’m doing less overtaking, and being taken over by the computer in my car.

Oh the Bluetooth talks to my mobile phone,
My engine’s ECU, means I’m not alone.
Electronic guidance will always take me home.

Automatic transmission means I’m in the right gear,
In-car entertainment chooses which songs I hear,
Airbags mean a crash is nothing to fear.

Oh, the dashboard reads out all of my texts,
The car will park itself.
Sometimes I get the feeling that the driver is being left on the rear parcel shelf.

Oh I like automotive technology, but things are going too far.
I’m doing less overtaking and being taken over by the computer in my car.

I am automotive technology. No, things aren’t going too far.
I’m doing less overtaking, and taking over from the human, in my car.
